San Francisco Day 4

I haven’t mentioned that the warehouse did not have hot water, so every morning I have been going to the gym using a free trial from LA Sports Clubs.  Their San Francisco gym is on Market St and is the most well-equipped gym I have seen anywhere – 3 floors of equipment of all kinds, classes, and a pool.  More importantly they have free towels, soap, shampoo and conditioner so I can have a decent shower to start the day.

After my morning workout I caught the cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf.

What I saw on the way - Swensen's!! There were a lot of these in Asia but I haven't seen any others in the US

I alighted at Lombard St.

The world's windiest

Fisherman’s Wharf was very touristy.  They had a lot of souvenir shops that also sold sports clothing.  I had a few samples from the shops then went to Pier 33 to catch the ferry to Alcatraz.  $26 buys the ferry, admission and an audio guide, and is good value.  You must book at least a day ahead, even in the off-season.  The trip is about 20 min on the ferry.  When you disembark on Alcatraz it’s worth listening to the Ranger before heading in to the theatre.  The film is worth watching and lasts 17min.  Then you can look around the rest of the place.

Escape from Alcatraz!

After arriving back on the mainland I had a look in the Ferry Building again – it’s full of artisan-type food outlets, and has good sampling.  I then had a look at a market in the UN Plaza, but it was small and lame.  Whatsmore there were many homeless people about, and one was quite openly injecting himself with drugs.  I went back to the gym and had another shower.
